- Phosphatidylcholine
Phosphatidylcholine is the most important component of the cell membrane and is needed for cell growth and division, especially brain cells. Phosphatidylcholine forms 40-50% of cell membrane phospholipids and supports brain function due to having choline nutrient. This phospholipid plays an important role in maintaining the function and structure of the membrane and participates in cell signaling.
Phosphatidylcholine is required for the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and is also involved in the synthesis of sphingomyelin. Sphingomyelin is essential for myelination of nerve fibers in the central and peripheral nervous system.
- Phosphatidylserine
Phosphatidylserine is one of the main phospholipids in the human cell membrane and constitutes 2-20% of the total phospholipid mass in the cell membrane. Myelin is rich in serine, therefore, sufficient amounts of phosphatidylserine are required for the efficient transmission of nerve messages in the human nervous system. Phosphatidylserine affects the metabolism of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters. Also, sufficient amounts of this phospholipid are necessary for the integration of secretory granules containing neurotransmitters with the presynaptic membrane and subsequently the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft and proper postsynaptic neurotransmitter receptor interactions. Phosphatidylserine supplementation supports cognitive function (attention, focus, and memory) and prevents increased cortisol secretion caused by acute stressors.
As the results of studies show, supplementation with phosphatidylserine in young students leads to strengthening of mental performance during the exam.
- Zinc
Most of the studies show the key role of zinc in neural processes including neurogenesis, synaptic function, myelination and regulation of intracellular signaling.
- Vitamin D
Due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, vitamin D protects the nervous system and affects proteins involved in learning, memory and concentration. Also, this vitamin is closely related to executive performance, including purposeful behavior, attention and adaptability to change.
- Vitamin B12
It plays an important role in DNA synthesis, myelination, synaptogenesis and neurotransmitter synthesis and has potential effects on mental development and performance. Higher levels of vitamin B12 in children are associated with improved cognitive function, developmental indicators, and academic performance in school.
- Vitamins E and C
With their antioxidant properties, protect cells, including nerve cells, from oxidative damage.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD):
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders that can continue into adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms of this disorder include failure to pay attention and stay focused, control behaviors, and hyperactivity. ADHD is caused by environmental and biological reasons, and the deficiency of micronutrients such as phospholipids, zinc, and vitamin D is associated with defects in neuronal plasticity and behavioral disorders in affected children. Pharmacological medication is the first choice in ADHD treatment. however, the role of nutritional supplements has been highlighted to compensate for nutritional deficiencies and treat children who do not respond to medication or do not tolerate medication due to side effects.
EuRho® Vital FokusPlus Kids tablets contain ingredients that help improve the symptoms of ADHD.
A 2013 study examined the effects of two-month supplementation with phosphatidylserine chewable tablets in children aged 4-14 years with ADHD. The results of this study showed that phosphatidylserine supplementation has beneficial effects on the frontal lobe and improves inattention errors, strengthens auditory short-term memory in children, and generally improves ADHD symptoms based on the criteria defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
The relationship between low levels of zinc and ADHD has also been confirmed, and the results of studies show that treatment with zinc improves attention in affected children (5, 6). In addition, vitamin D deficiency is involved in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders including ADHD and affects dopamine levels through various mechanisms. Vitamin D supplementation shows positive results in improving ADHD symptoms.
